Our mission is to provide temporary care and shelter for stray, abandoned and relinquished animals, and to place as many as possible into responsible and caring homes. The Animal Refuge League also works to create awareness and support for the humane treatment of all animals and to end animal overpopulation through education and the promotion of spaying and neutering.

Furry Friends Photo Contest!

From March 26th to April 12th, Focus Photography will be photographing Furry Friends for an online voting Photo Contest, with awesome prizes donated by Fetch.

For just a $25 donation to the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland, your pet will be photographed at our studio by award-winning photographer Will Wenzel, and their best image will be posted on this site for everyone to see.

Then, on April 13th, the real fun begins! Tell everyone you know you need their vote, because our Furry Friends Contest Winner will be chosen by popular choice!!!

The top prize is a custom designed pet bed from Fetch, where you can choose from 36 different patterns to create the pet bed of your designer dreams!

Six runners-up will receive certificates for a free dog wash at Fetch's brand new self-service dog wash.

Appointments for photo sessions are required, so you won't have to wait in any long lines. Our photographer will choose the contest entry image, unless you would like to come back to view all the images during a presentation and ordering appointment. Or, for a $95 web fee (which goes entirely towards your print order), we can put all of the images on a private online gallery for you. The choice is yours.

And every pet who enters will recieve the adulation, praise, and recognition they deserve for being such an adorable friend. So come join the fun. Donate to a good cause (the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland), and come have some fun with your Furry Friend!

to a cat or dog than to any human being.”

The Top Prize!

Available at Fetch! (who donated all our prizes), the Crypton Custom Designed Pet Bed is truly the most fashionable of all pet cushions. Choose separate fabrics for top, bottom, middle, and piping, and let your furry friend luxuriate in designer bedding.

About the ARL

The Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland (ARL) is a private nonprofit animal shelter established in 1911. The vast majority of our funding is made through the generosity of the general public.

The ARL is first and foremost an adoption agency. Every year, we take in more than 4,000 stray, abandoned or owner surrendered animals. Our goal is to care for them as humanely as possible until we can reunite them with their owners or until someone chooses to adopt them. Our adoption process is extremely thorough in order to ensure that our animals are placed into a loving home for life. All animals adopted from the Animal Refuge League are spayed or neutered either before or at the time they are adopted from us. This progressive program also allows us to spay or neuter animals as young as eight weeks old.  Pediatric spaying or neutering is enthusiastically endorsed by the American Humane Association.

Contrary to misguided beliefs, the ARL does not have a time limit on how long an animal may stay with us. In many cases, healthy and well-adjusted animals stay until a home is found for them. More than 80 percent
of the animals that come to us find their way to a home. In addition, the Animal Refuge League saves hundreds of injured and ill animals each year by arranging for care with local veterinarians.

The Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland is located at 449 Stroudwater Street in Westbrook.

“Most pets display so many humanlike traits and emotions it's easy to forget they're not gifted with the English language and then get snubbed when we talk to them and they don't say anything back.”
~Stephenie Geist
