We love it when families get together here in Maine and want a family portrait at the water. This is the Greene family, who opted to trek down to the rocks for their group portrait, and some of the smaller groupings we take whenever we’re working with a family.

These are the Dumas and Dumas-Hall families. We’ve been lucky enough to work with Jennifer, her husband Bill, and their son Nathan for a couple of years, and this January Jennifer brought her parents and her sister’s family in with them.

Painted portraits of children

These are two paintings I did of Nolan and Kari – the children from yesterday’s beach post. The paintings are hand stroked on a Wacom tablet, then giclee printed on fine art paper or directly on canvas. Painted portraits are literally works of art with the people you love in them.

Family Portraits at the Beach

Tuesday night we worked with two families from Indiana who were in Maine on vacation. They each had a young child, and the little girl (Kari) had a crush on the boy (Nolan). When we work on the beach, we get a few family groups, then some images of your family having fun together, then some shots of the kids seperately. Here are some of the family shots.

Kids at Fort Williams

Two winters ago, we met the Malette family, and did a studio session for Ace, Alicia, Cameron, and his new baby brother, Dominic. Last week, we met the family at Fort Williams, and were amazed to find that Dominic is 2, and all over the place!

I love maternity sessions, and we do a fair amount of them, but I don’t often put images online because of their more personal nature. But I don’t want you to think we don’t shoot them, or that we only do the fine art nude maternity shots (which I can’t put up here), so I’m showing you just a couple of images from Gigi’s session.

Bravo to Henk, not only for coming and participating, but for being so supportive to Gigi. We feel that the most important thing we can capture at a maternity session is an image that shows your baby they were born into a family of love. Can’t wait for the baby!

Let me tell you this about me – I’m a mama’s boy. I always was, and I find the bond between mother’s and their kids fascinating. Any chance we have to work with moms and their kids, we’ll take it. Alex is a really special kid, and he takes good care of his mother, Schawn. Here’s some of their images from a connection session, which focuses on the bonds between people, and are usually all black and white.

Here are a few images from a family session we did at the park recently – we do a lot of families at the beach and the park, and it seems that I only post images when there are little kids involved. Here’s a family with kids that have finished school.

Edited: I had to clone out the woman who walked into the background and fed the ducks when we printed this image. If you want to see the after image, drop me a line. If i were a more clever photographer, I’d never have taken the image with her back there.
And we did ask her to move, but this image while she was there was the favorite.

Wow – I can’t remember the last time I posted babies, kids, or maternity shots on the blog. I’ll work on that, because we get some really cute babies here, and I’ve been having a lot of fun with them. Not as much fun as today’s baby has been having – just 12 weeks old, and she’s already caught 3 Red Sox games! And, fielded a fly ball, from what I hear. Matt and Chris, today was a real pleasure, and I can’t wait for you to see the rest of Althea’s images.

Family at the Beach

This is the Gerber family, at the beach in Cape Elizabeth. This is a rocky beach session – I like the different levels you get with the rocky shores. We also have a smooth sand, beach grass type of beach we work at if you prefer that look. But I prefer the rocks.

Guidi Family in the Park

We usually schedule family sessions in the early evening, hoping that the sunlight will turn the sky red as the session goes on, and the light will get better and better as it darkens. We photographed this family at a park in the east end, overlooking Portland. As you’ll see, just before dark the sky was glowing red – a photographer’s dream.

Family Session on the Rocks

This is a family session we did last week on the coast. Okay, a little late on the blogging, but we’ve been really busy since the 4th. Look for a lot of catching up in the next week or so.

So this is the Weeks family from Brunswick, who tempted me with the idea of a family session on their new boat, but then yanked the boat out of the photoshoot at the last minute. So this is a special appeal to our blog readers – I need a family shoot on a boat. It doesn’t have to be a ridiculous yacht, or even a powerboat – sailing would be awesome. And don’t get me wrong – I don’t want to be on the boat. I want to be on the dock, or an island, or even another boat, while you and your family come sailing by. Maybe flying a spinaker, I don’t know. Definitely looking nautical, navy and white would be great. If you’ve got the boat, the family, and are willing to find the clothing, (and no one in your family has three heads), the photo session is on me. Tell your friends down at the marina.

Enough about me and how I was cheated out of the picture I really wanted – these pictures on the rocks are awesome.

Karri/Chelsea Session

Yesterday we had Karri and her daughter Chelsea in for a Mother/Child connection session, and the images were fantastic.

Connection studies are a very contemporary photo session, with an emphasis on the bonds between people. We ask our connection’s clients to dress in black, long sleeved clothing to keep the focus on the relationship between the subjects, and not on what they are wearing.

Connection Studies are shot on both black backgrounds, for artistic black and white images, as well as on medium tone brown images, which complements most homes decor.

I’ve been shooting a lot of Mother/Child sessions lately for a fall exhibit we’re planning. I’ll post the dates here when we have them firmed up.

Hill Family Portrait

A couple days ago I poste images of the Hill’s snow poster, and I just wanted to add a couple of shots from their family shoot. The Hills live in Florida, and we’ve been fortunate enough to have them in our studio while they’re visiting New England several times now.

Here’s the final snow poster for the Hill family, and then we’ll look at some of the images taken to create it.

So the Hills came in for a family shoot (I’ll post those tomorrow), and they also brought some of their skiwear to create a winter poster. Here’s what we do. Each person is shot seperately on a white background, sitting on a sleigh, and they have to rock back and forth and pretend to be sledding. We’ve got fake snow to press on them, and give the sleds some realism. Then the images are combined to create our snow stories. Okay, here are some of the snow images that created this:

Same thing here – a ton of images are taken of them seperately and together, and combined to create the entire cheer squad. I’ll post the family part of this photo shoot soon. Thanks for looking.
